Best of Mendoza Wine & Mountain Tour

As Argentina´s travel destinations go, Mendoza is definitely a crowd-pleaser, full of non-stop palate-pleasing... Mendoza Holidays offers this private luxury wine vacations in the most beautiful regions of the province, with an emphasis on wine tasting and dining...

Day 1: Welcome to Mendoza

Arrival to Mendoza and airport meet and greet and transfer to your hotel/lodge. Day at leisure to explore the city.

Day 2: Luján de Cuyo Wine Tour

Today explore the different microclimates in the region of Luján de Cuyo to better get to know Argentina´ most beloved grape-Malbec.

Your first visit will be to Bodega Achaval Ferrer, a boutique winery which produces only limited quantities of high quality red wines. A strong passion and shared love for Mendoza´s terrain brought the perfect union of Argentinean and Italian friends to launch their esteemed winery in 1998. 'We decided to make every wine an expression – a ‘spotlight’ – of old vine Malbec', explains Santiago, the owner. He has three different ideas of Malbec in Mendoza. The first spotlight is Malbec as fruit: correct varietal expression of Malbec. The second is 'spotlight': pursuit of a perfect wine with complexity and balance. This is Quimera, which translates as foolish – pursuing the unobtainable. The third spotlight is Malbec as a translator of the character of the land, and this is represented by three single-vineyard old vine Malbecs. Achaval Ferrer is one of Argentina's most impressive producer.

Then we will leave for Nicolás Catena's winery, Catena Zapata, perhaps one of the most surprising constructions in the area due to its form, similar to a Mayan pyramid. Bodega Catena Zapata needs little introduction to most wine lovers. They were the first to bring these high quality wines into the international market, and it is Catena Zapata that deserves the credit for alerting the world to the potential of Argentina. In the early 1980s when the rest of Argentina was content to make wines of no great merit, Catena Zapata was the first to experiment with oak aging and other techniques designed to improve quality.

We continue to Bodega Ruca Malén where we´ll enjoy a one-of-a-kind dining experience. From the foothills of the Andes Mountains, the focus of Ruca Malen is producing wines that speak of the land and their commitment to the environment. There, you will taste their entire wine list, including their famous and iconic "Kinien". The dining room is located inside a glass room in the vineyards with a view of the Andes. The menu is amazing and the courses are universally excellent, with clever taste combinations, great presentation and appropriate wine matching.

Return to the hotel.

Day 3:  Uco Valley

Located an hour south of the action in Luján, the high-altitude Uco Valley has extended beyond Malbec. Many wineries are experimenting with new varietals like Cabernet, Tempranillo, and Syrah. Well inside the first mountainsides of the Andes foothills, the Uco Valley presents the highest altitudes at which wines are produced in the province of Mendoza: up to 1,400 meters above sea level. A lush agricultural valley amid a parched desert, the valley floor is dotted by almond trees and orchards. The Andes feel like they are at arm´s length.

Our first visit will be to Bodega Salentein. Respectful of the land´s vibrantly textured past, Salentein is equally inspired by the land´s remarkably promising future. It is this delicate balance of old and new- of blending the tradition of long-celebrated European winemaking methods with the bold ingenuity of the New World- that defines the Salentein style.

Then, we move towards Bodega La Azul. Tiny is the impression you have as you drive up to La Azul. It is hard not to look around wondering where the rest of the winery is. A single stark building, not much larger than other winery’s garages is all that is required to make some of the finest wines in Argentina.Hosted by one of the winemakers, we´ll taste their Cabernet and Malbec wines, which have grabbed much attention for their distinct personality and excellent value.

We continue for lunch at one of the great rising stars of the region: Andeluna Cellars. Andeluna would look quite at home in a remote part of Texas as a hunting lodge. This is not accidental, Andeluna has deep roots in Texas. Ward Lay, the owner of Andeluna is the son of the late Texan Herman Lay, founder of Frito-Lay. Situated at the foot of the Andes just outside of the town of Tupungato in the Uco Valley, Andeluna has magnificent views of the mountains. The huge windows of the dining room are designed to take advantage of the effect, allowing us to enjoy the view as much as the food.

Return to the hotel.

Day 4: High Mountain Tour

Leaving the city along the National route 7, our trip begins with a visit to  a boutique micro-winery located in the Perdriel sub-region of Lujan de Cuyo: Bonfanti Winery. This small, family run business; Roberto, the father, manages the vineyard; Sebastian, one of the sons is the winemaker; and Alejandro, the other son, runs the business side.  Everything is done by hand, from harvest to bottling, on the estate. Bonfanti is situated on a beautiful property with olive trees intermingled in the vineyards and views of the Andes to one side.
After the tour and tasting we continue our ride through an area filled with small farms and vineyards. Soon after, following the route that skirts the winding course of the Mendoza river, you will leave the countryside behind in order to enter the pre-mountain range area. The first stop will be in Potrerillos, a small mountain town, with weekend residences belonging to the inhabitants of Mendoza. There is also an unbeatable view of the Potrerillos dam which forms a breathtaking artificial lake. The following section of the route leads to Uspallata, framed by mountainous landscapes with changing colours, filled with various geological formations and many tunnels on the road. The famous film "Seven years in Tibet" was filmed in this valley.

The trip continues towards several other small mountain towns, Polvaredas, Punta de Vacas, Penitentes, until you reach Puente del Inca, a natural bridge where Las Cuevas river has drilled into the mountains forming this incredible natural attraction. Thermal water emerges from different areas and several pools are being used by the climbers as a free spa!

Close to the border, a wonderful viewpoint allows us to see the Aconcagua Mt in all its splendor, which stands at 6,962 meters ( 22,841 feet) above sea level . We´ll enter the stunning Horcones Lagoon and to the Provincial Park for a small walk and pictures. The mountains in the Andes are the highest in the world outside of the Himalayas. On the way back we will discover the little and charming town of Uspallata, before driving along Mendoza River on the way back to Mendoza city.  This tour is really an amazing way to see and experience the spectacular wilderness areas of the Andes Mountains in Mendoza. End of tour around 6.00pm.
